Ahead of the 2027 general elections, A former spokesperson to ex–Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Segun Sowunmi, has announced his intention to contest as Ogun State governor.

BEYOND AFRICA reports that Sowunmi made the declaration on Tuesday during an interactive session with supporters and journalists held via Zoom.

The former presidential aide said his decision was motivated by what he described as persistent development gaps and governance failures across the state.

According to him, insecurity, weak healthcare delivery, poor education systems, and lack of policy continuity have continued to hold Ogun State back.

“As a critical stakeholder who has always been there, I have continued to offer support, and at this critical time, I am coming forward with the best ideas for governance in our dear state,” he said.

Sowunmi lamented what he described as the absence of continuity in government policies and programmes, stressing that successive administrations had failed to build on existing initiatives.

He also faulted the state for not maximising its strategic advantage as a neighbour to Lagos State.

“Ogun has failed to fully harness the economic opportunities that come with its proximity to Lagos at several points,” he said.

The governorship hopeful expressed concern over the state of healthcare facilities in Ogun, describing the situation as embarrassing.

“We need to design Ogun not to work for the person in Oke-Mosan, but to work for every person in the nooks and crannies of the state,” he said.

“It is a little bit disgusting that Ogun has been embarrassed in terms of interventions in hospitals. If we look at the infrastructure in the oldest government hospital located in Abeokuta, the Sacred Heart Hospital, there is no reason why Ogun should not be the healthcare capital of the South-West,” Sowunmi added.

While acknowledging the prolonged crises within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sowunmi said he was still consulting widely and monitoring developments across political parties.

He disclosed that he would soon announce the platform on which he would pursue his governorship ambition.
