With utmost anger and deep concern, we the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, issues this press release to condemn in its totality the sheer irresponsibility, recklessness, and inexcusable incompetence displayed by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) during the conduct of the English Language II paper of the 2025 WASSCE, held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
Thousands of our students were stranded and subjected to mental trauma across examination centers in Southwest region of Nigeria particularly Osun State and Lagos State and other parts of the federation due to WAEC’s failure to deliver question papers on time. What was meant to be a 2:00 PM examination turned into a nightmarish ordeal for students who waited hopelessly until after 8:00 PM in many centers.
This is not just a delay, it is a blatant endangerment of students’ safety, a gross violation of their right to proper examination conditions, and an open assault on their future. In some centers where papers finally arrived, our students were compelled to write under torchlights. What kind of examination body subjects young minds to such inhuman treatment?
This disgrace is not an isolated case. On May 23, students in Unity Modern School, Asaba, Delta State, experienced a similar horror, writing exams late into the night after a four-hour delay. Is WAEC now a trauma-inflicting institution rather than an examination body?
NANS Southwest Zone D hereby issues the following demands:
1. We demand that the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, must immediately investigate WAEC’s serial failure and ensure responsible officers are sanctioned.
2. We call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene directly. This disaster contradicts the “Renewed Hope Agenda”. how can there be hope when students are writing national exams in darkness?
3. We demand answers from the Head of WAEC, Dr. Amos Dangut. Under his leadership, WAEC has shown signs of decay, and we will not keep quiet while our fellow comrades are turned into victims of political sabotage.
We strongly suspect that certain political elements are toying with WAEC for selfish ends, and we say: No to using our students as pawns in any political game! NANS will not fold its arms while the credibility of our education system is destroyed.
Let it be known that if swift action is not taken to correct these abnormalities, NANS Southwest will be forced to mobilize all our structures in campuses and on the streets to fight back against this attack on Nigerian students.
Enough is Enough!
ALUTA CONTINUA! VICTORIA ASCERTA!!
