Strong indications from within the All Progressives Congress (APC) show that internal balancing and respect for senior party figures informed the replacement of Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, as chairman of the party’s National Convention Central Coordination Committee.
Party sources disclosed that former Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari, was selected to head the committee ahead of the APC national convention scheduled for March 27 and 28, 2026.
Confirmation of the adjustment was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the APC National Secretary, Mr Ajibola Basiru.
Under the new composition, former Senate President, Senator Pius Anyim, was appointed Vice Chairman I of the committee, while Governor Uzodimma was reassigned to serve as treasurer of the 73-member body.
Party insiders said the leadership considered it important to place founding and long-serving members in prominent positions ahead of the convention.
A senior party source explained that Masari and Anyim were selected because of their experience, acceptability and perceived neutrality within the party.
“The leadership believes our old leaders deserve respect and strategic responsibilities. That informed the decision to place Masari and Senator Anyim in key positions,” the source said.
Another party official disclosed that zoning considerations also influenced the arrangement, noting that with President Bola Tinubu from the South, it was considered appropriate for a northerner to head the convention committee.
Findings further revealed that the committee is made up of governors, National Assembly leaders, former presiding officers, past national chairmen and some serving ministers.
Sources added that the APC is working towards a smooth convention that may largely be based on consensus in order to minimise internal disagreements.
When contacted, Basiru declined to comment further on the reconstitution of the committee.
The APC’s decision reflects an attempt to manage internal interests and give recognition to veteran members as the party prepares for a crucial convention. Such balancing may help reduce tensions, but sustained unity will depend on transparent processes and inclusive leadership beyond the convention stage.
