A 500-level student of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Victor Onakoya, has been arrested after his vehicle rammed into a couple riding on a motorcycle along the Igan road in the Ago-Iwoye area of the state, causing their death.

BEYOND AFRICA learnt on Sunday from a senior police officer who did not want to be mentioned in print that the suspect was arrested after a mob attempted to lynch him when they realised the damage he had caused.

It was reported on Thursday that the accident, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, left a female passenger dead at the spot while the motorcyclist, who sustained injuries, was rescued at a hospital.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, had confirmed the incident in a traffic update sent to our correspondent on Wednesday, adding that the accident involved a Toyota Camry with number plate JJJ 168 GY and a red Bajaj motorcycle with number plate KNN 873 ZY.

Akinbiyi had noted that an eyewitness account indicated that reckless driving on the part of the Toyota Camry driver led to a head-on collision with the Bajaj motorcycle, leaving the female passenger dead.

Meanwhile, a further investigation revealed that the hospitalised motorcyclist and the female passenger were a couple.

The victims, identified as Dare Adeyemi and Shadia Oshifuyi, were said to be heading from Ago-Iwoye to B3 Junction when the accident occurred.

The senior police officer disclosed that the motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The police source said, “At about 0620hrs, Wednesday, July 16, 2025, a fatal road traffic accident occurred along Igan Road, Ago Iwoye, involving a Toyota Camry (wine colour) with registration number LAGOS JJJ 168 GY, and a Bajaj motorcycle with registration number OGUN KNN 662 VC.

“A preliminary investigation revealed that the motorcycle was heading from Ago Iwoye Garage toward the B3 Junction, while the Toyota Camry was travelling in the opposite direction. The vehicle driver reportedly lost control, veered off his lane, and rammed into the oncoming motorcycle.

“The female passenger died on the spot, while the motorcyclist sustained serious injuries to his hand and legs.”

The police source added that the injured victim was rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

“Upon receipt of the report, the divisional patrol team mobilised to the scene, rushed the injured victim to Detomi Hospital, Molipa, Ijebu Ode, where he was later confirmed dead by the attending doctor.

“A mob gathered at the scene but was dispersed by the police, preventing the lynching of the driver and the burning of the vehicle.

“The driver was rescued and brought to the station for safety and interrogation and he is still in custody, while the deceased persons were deposited at the General Hospital Morgue, Ijebu Igbo, for autopsy,” the source said.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, had yet to respond to an enquiry on the incident as of the time of filing this report on Sunday.
