Global tourism to the most visited countries has shown strong growth despite recent challenges, as people continue exploring new destinations and returning to popular spots..
According to the World Economic Outlook Report, tourism grew by 2.9% in 2024, building on a 3% increase the year before.
Based on data from the Global Tourism Organisation, here are the top five most visited countries and their visitor numbers.
1. France – 89.4 million arrivals
Growth Rate: 2.90%
France is the most visited country in the world, with 89.4 million tourists in 2024. Tourists come to see famous attractions like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, and the beautiful landscapes of Provence. France’s growth rate of 2.9% shows its continued popularity.
2. Spain – 83.7 million arrivals
Growth Rate: 0.80%
Spain attracts millions with its beaches, historic cities, and lively culture. In 2024, 83.7 million people visited, making it one of Europe’s top travel destinations. From Barcelona’s architecture to the beaches of the Costa del Sol, Spain offers something for everyone. Its tourism grew by 0.8%.
3. United States – 79.3 million arrivals
Growth Rate: 0.60%
The United States saw 79.3 million visitors in 2024. Tourists are drawn to iconic sites like New York’s Times Square, Disney World in Florida, and the Grand Canyon. Although growth was slower at 0.6%, the U.S. remains a top choice for its diverse experiences in nature, culture, and entertainment.
4. China – 65.7 million arrivals
Growth Rate: 4.50%
China has a strong 4.5% growth in tourism, with 65.7 million visitors in 2024. Popular sites like the Great Wall, Forbidden City, and Terracotta Warriors highlight China’s rich history. Major cities like Beijing and Shanghai offer a blend of tradition and modern life. China has also focused on sustainable tourism and improving tourist experiences.
5. Italy – 64.5 million arrivals
Growth Rate: 4.80%
Italy welcomed 64.5 million tourists in 2024, marking a high growth rate of 4.8%. Italy’s attractions range from Venice’s canals to the ancient ruins in Rome. Known for its art, history, and cuisine, Italy remains a beloved destination, with rising numbers each year.
