Chaos erupted in Akure on Tuesday as a stakeholders’ meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) descended into violence with the Party Chairman, Engr.Ade Adetimehin physically assaulted by the thugs.

The gathering, intended to foster party unity, was abruptly terminated when armed thugs stormed the venue, forcing panicked members to flee for safety and leaving the party leadership physically bloodied.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers believed to be young men armed with sticks, machetes and other crude weapons invaded the premises suddenly, shouting threats and causing widespread fear.

Participants reportedly scattered in different directions to escape the violence, while the venue was abandoned within minutes. Several party officials and supporters were said to have taken refuge in nearby buildings, as others fled the area entirely.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation of arrests or the identities of those behind the attack.

Security agencies are yet to issue a detailed statement, and no verified list of suspects or injured persons has been released.

Speaking to newsmen after the attack, the APC Chairman in the State, Engineer Ade Adetimehin alleged that the thugs were members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers and that he was beaten to stupor by the hoodlums.

“They said we were undermining the interest of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and I said no but they descended on me and beat me very well,” he narrated.

The disruption, however, highlights growing tensions within the APC in Ondo State.

In recent political cycles, the party has grappled with internal disagreements over leadership structure, candidate selection and factional loyalties, divisions analysts say can fuel intimidation and violent disruptions at political gatherings.

Although Tuesday’s incident has not been officially linked to any specific faction, party insiders disclosed that the meeting was expected to deliberate on sensitive internal matters ahead of future party activities. This has fueled speculation that the disruption may have been politically motivated, though authorities have yet to confirm this.

Residents near the secretariat described scenes of confusion as party members rushed out of the premises, with some vehicles reportedly speeding away as attendees sought to avoid further escalation. No fatalities have been confirmed, but witnesses said the psychological impact on those present was evident.

The attack has also renewed concerns about security arrangements at political events, as observers note that such gatherings increasingly require heightened protection amid factional rivalries.

For the APC in Ondo State, the immediate priority will be to de-escalate tensions, investigate the incident and reassure members that party activities can continue safely. Party leaders are expected to hold internal consultations to determine the next steps.
