The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has accused a local government chairman of destructing railway assets.

According to a statement by the NRC, the council chairman of Ibadan south-west LGA, led the destruction of the railway assets.

NRC said the council chairman arrived at the Mile One-Ten axis along the corporation’s right-of-way with a group that included suspected thugs, individuals dressed in Nigerian army uniforms, and operatives of the Oyo state security network agency (Amotekun).

The spokesperson of the NRC, Callistus Unyimadu said the group allegedly vandalised and carted away critical rail infrastructure, including rails, sleepers, signal poles, billboards, and fencing belonging to NRC tenants in the corridor.

“According to the report, the destruction which occurred on Monday, 2nd February 2026, was carried out by the Chairman of the Ibadan South-West Local Government Council, Hon. Kehinde Adeyemi Amanda, who allegedly led a group comprising thugs, persons dressed in Nigerian Army uniforms, and operatives of Amotekun to vandalize NRC properties at the Mile One-Ten axis,” the statement reads.

“The Council Chairman claimed to be working on the instructions of the state Governor. During the incident, NRC rail assets including rails, sleepers, signal poles, billboards, as well as fences belonging to NRC tenants along the corridor, were reportedly destroyed and carted away. The Corporation stated that the affected area is a clearly defined and statutorily protected railway right-of-way,” the statement added.

Unyimadu said efforts by the NRC police command to stop the operation were reportedly resisted, forcing the officers to withdraw from the scene.

The corporation said the chairman claimed he was acting on the instructions of Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo.

Kayode Opeifa, chairman of NRC, appealed to Makinde to intervene and call the LGA chairman to order to prevent further breakdown of law and order or continued abuse of railway workers’ rights.

The NRC described the incident as a grave violation of federal assets, and vowed to pursue appropriate security, administrative, and legal actions to protect its properties and prevent future encroachments nationwide.
