The Founder of the Christy Oluwabunmi Foundation, Mrs Christy Oyewole, has petitioned the Ogun State House of Assembly, accusing a traditional ruler in Yewa North Local Government Area of the state, Oba Adekeye Adeyemi, the Abepa of Joga-Orile, of an alleged marriage scam.
Oyewole, who resides in Croydon, London, United Kingdom, alleged that Oba Adeyemi gave her a fake marriage document.
In the petition dated May 8, 2025, and addressed to the Speaker of the Assembly, Oludaisi Elemide, Oyewole stated, “I am a Nigerian based in the United Kingdom. I made the greatest mistake of my life when I married Oba Adekeye Adeyemi Olanrewaju after my first marriage collapsed due to incessant domestic violence.”
According to the woman, the monarch promised to facilitate her divorce from her former husband, which he did.
However, she later discovered that both the divorce and marriage documents he provided were fake.
“After I married Oba Adekeye, he repeatedly exploited me, taking my hard-earned money, which accumulated to about N65m, jewellery worth about N50m, and other properties, including phones, with promises to return everything he borrowed from me,” the woman alleged.
Oyewole said her efforts to recover the money and items proved futile as the monarch kept leveraging his position to escape justice.
When contacted for his reaction at 2:28pm on Wednesday, Oba Adeyemi initially answered the call but abruptly ended it after our correspondent introduced himself.
Subsequent calls to his lines on Thursday and Friday failed to connect, and he had not responded to four text and WhatsApp messages sent to him as of the time of filing this report.
The petition was stamped and received by the Speaker’s office on May 9, 2025.
Confirming receipt of the petition, the Assembly Clerk, Mr Sakiru Adebakin, said investigations had commenced and both parties would be invited in due course.
“We receive petitions often, and as usual, we’ll invite the petitioner and the respondent. I can confirm that we received the petition. We will do our bit, but I cannot say exactly when both parties will be summoned, as we have other pending petitions,” Adebakin stated.
Meanwhile, Oyewole said she had reported the case at the Ogun State Police Command in Elewe-Eran, Abeokuta, the state capital.
However, several phone calls to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, on Friday were unsuccessful.
As of the time of filing this report, she had also not responded to WhatsApp messages sent to her.
