President Bola Tinubu has requested the Senate to confirm the nomination of former Kebbi State Governor, Saidu Dakingari, as a non-career ambassador.
The request of Tinubu was read during plenary on Tuesday by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
Recalls that in January 2026, a State House press release issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, had said Tinubu approved the posting of Usman Isa Dakingari Suleiman, a former governor of Kebbi State, as Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Turkey.
However, hours after the initial announcement, the Presidency backtracked on its earlier statement and said no ambassador-designate has been posted to Turkey.
The presidency stated that the appointment is still under review following a naming mix-up.
The clarification was contained in a corrected State House statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, spokesperson to President Bola Tinubu.
According to the statement, President Tinubu has so far approved the posting of only three ambassador-designates from the 68 nominees earlier confirmed by the Senate.
The Presidency noted that Ambassador Ayodele Oke has been posted to France, while Colonel Lateef Are (rtd) was approved as Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to the United States of America. Ambassador Aminu Dalhatu, a former envoy to South Korea, was also confirmed as the High Commissioner-designate to the United Kingdom.
Dakingari’s name did not feature in any of the ambassadorial lists forwarded to the Senate by President Tinubu in December.
