*Office of the Coordinator*
_FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE_
March 17, 2026
*NANS SOUTHWEST (ZONE D) DECLARES MASS PROTEST OVER POWER FAILURE, STUDENT EXPLOITATION, AND EDUCATIONAL DECLINE*
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, under the leadership of the Coordinator, Comrade Josiah Adeyemo Kayode, hereby notifies the general public of its decision to embark on a peaceful mass protest scheduled for Wednesday, 18th March, 2026, in Osogbo, Osun State.
This decision comes after several press engagements, consultations, and public outcries by the leadership of NANS Southwest on critical issues affecting Nigerian students yet no meaningful response, engagement, or dialogue has been initiated by the relevant authorities.
Having exhausted all institutional and diplomatic channels, Nigerian students are now left with no option but to take to the streets in a lawful and peaceful manner to demand accountability.
*CALL FOR SOLIDARITY*
NANS Southwest hereby calls on all sister student bodies and allied organizations to join this mass action, including:
National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS)
National Association of University Students (NAUS)
National Association of Colleges of Education Students (NACES)
National Female Students Association (NFSAN)
Indigenous student bodies and all progressive student movements
This struggle is collective, and the voice of Nigerian students must be heard across all levels.
*ISSUES DRIVING THE PROTEST*
Over time, NANS Southwest has consistently raised concerns about the worsening condition of students across the region, including:
1. Persistent Electricity Crisis:
Despite repeated warnings and engagements, the power situation remains deplorable, with students forced to study under inhumane conditions. Prolonged outages continue to disrupt academic activities and threaten the safety and welfare of students.
2. Rising Hostel and Accommodation Costs:
Students are increasingly subjected to exploitative housing conditions, with landlords and agents imposing excessive and unjustifiable rent increases, forcing many into unsafe living environments.
3. Police Brutality and Harassment of Students:
There has been a disturbing rise in cases of intimidation, unlawful arrests, extortion, and harassment of students by security operatives across the Southwest. This must come to an end.
4. Lack of Educational Reform:
At a time when the global system is rapidly advancing through digital innovation and Artificial Intelligence, Nigeria’s educational framework remains outdated, leaving students unprepared for the realities of the modern world.
*OUR POSITION*
Nigerian students can no longer continue to operate under conditions that undermine their future, dignity, and safety.
Education cannot thrive in darkness.
Students cannot survive under exploitation.
And learning cannot take place in fear.
*CONCLUSION*
We therefore urge all students, stakeholders, civil society organizations, and well-meaning Nigerians to support this movement.
This protest is not just a demonstration it is a necessary stand for the survival and future of Nigerian students.
Aluta Continua, Victoria Ascerta.
